Madelyn Rose was only four years old when she got her first instrument, a small Casio keyboard her parents had found at a garage sale in upstate New York. There was a spark there, something her parents seemed to recognize; two years later Madelyn’s father started plugging a microphone into an old guitar amp and hosting karaoke nights with his six-year-old daughter. “Yeah, it was pretty much just my dad and I,” she remembers. “I was too shy to even show my mom.” Eventually, though, the practice inspired the budding performer to start recording vocal covers of her favorite songs and uploading them to YouTube.

A few years later, a break from her regularly scheduled classical piano lesson (thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic) inspired Madelyn to begin writing her own music. “It gave me an opportunity to go off on my own tangent,” she explains. “I was able to learn chords and have the building blocks to make songs rather than a masterpiece or something that would take me months to learn.” Though she was uncertain at first, Madelyn’s parents encouraged her to keep exploring. The process quickly developed into a much more ambitious project: an album.

Twelve original songs in hand, Madelyn converted her bedroom into a home studio and recorded and produced a full-length album, even teaching herself the basics of mixing and mastering the songs herself. Indulging her natural curiosity and an unprecedented intuition, at fourteen, for even the technical side of the music-making process, Madelyn felt her new passion fall quickly into place. “Once I figured out I enjoyed every step of it — the singing, the writing, the producing, the releasing — it was like, ‘this is something I want to do.’”

Now sixteen years old, Madelyn endeavors to write her songs from an honest perspective drawing from her own lived experiences as a teenager in the 2020s. While songs like “Taillights Fade” and its slated followup “Won’t Be Me” helped the young songwriter process her own heartbreak, she also carefully and gently turns them outwards in hopes they could help other young people work through similar emotions, with a keen awareness for the increased importance of earnest expression to her peers. “Especially in this generation with social media, seeing when people are active on their phone, it’s very toxic in a way it didn’t used to be,” she offers, insightfully articulating the effect she hopes her music will have on fans. “I just want people to feel like they’re okay.”

That empowering perspective is inspired in large part by Carrie Underwood, who she describes as an “all- time idol” for songwriting and vocal performance, part of a rich palette of country music Madelyn grew up with. “It’s so funny,” she explains. “I feel like once people my age got on Tik Tok and Instagram, country kind of became cool now? That’s what I’ve always been listening to, and I used to get made fun of for it.” Growing up on a lake in upstate New York, Madelyn recalls feeling inspired by the synergy between her idyllic surroundings and the outdoorsy pastoral sound of country icon Kenny Chesney. “I’ve always been interested in doing country music. Nothing else ever really clicked with me.”

After visiting Nashville for the first time in 2022 Madelyn found something of a home-away-from-home in music’s capitol city. Later that year she was signed by Nashville-based label Vere Music, who released “Taillights Fade” as her first single in January 2023; the song was co-written by local Nashville talents Justin Klump and Lauryn Tauber. “That’s where I want to live,” she laughs. “The only reason why I’m still here is because I’m sixteen.”

In the meantime, she’ll continue boating, surfing, and wakeboarding on the lake, listening to the country music she’s always loved (even before it was cool) while periodically escaping to Nashville to make music that reflects the life she’s living and the life she’s building, the growing-up she’s doing. “I want anyone who listens to connect with the lyrics and realize that they are not alone,” she begins, before settling into a much larger and more resonant explanation: “I’m going through life right alongside them.”
